Not taking the medication on a regular basis will lead to severe episodes, relapses and hospitalization. Those around the bipolar patient, such as family and friends, should continue to monitor the patient’s mood, sleep patterns, change in eating habits and behaviors to prevent the onset of manic or depressive episodes. Bipolar patients should not use alcohol or drugs, even mild drugs such as marijuana can make bipolar symptoms worse. Bipolar Disorder is a condition where someone feels both “highs” (manic episodes) and “lows” (depressive episodes) at different times. There can be rapid movements between these highs and lows or the interval between them can be months at times. There is great variation in the severity of the mood shifts.

Bipolar Signs

Bipolar disorder symptoms are not universal and not all people will experience the same symptoms or even those who do experience the same symptoms, the severity will differ. Bipolar disease has many factors that can affect it and they are unique to each family and to each individual. Bipolar disorder is common and can be very serious if it is left untreated. If signs or symptoms of bipolar disorder appear, immediately seek the attention of a psychiatrist.

Depression stage may be likened to a severe depression in which symptoms can include low energy, sad feelings, depressed, anxiety, emptiness, being helpless and feeling hopeless and worthless. Going with these negative feelings are thoughts of suicide and wanting to commit suicide. Some other  signs which can be added are guilt feelings, no interest in activities once enjoyed, loss of concentration, problems with sleeping, and change in appetite.

Children with the Disease

It is important for all those working with young children, both parents and school staff, to familiarize themselves with the range of bipolar disorder symptoms. When the important people in a child’s life are able to recognize early-onset bipolar disorder, fast action in the form of diagnosis and treatment can be taken. When everyone works together in a program for the child with behavioral, academic or social problems there is a good chance of successful treatment.

Seeking Treatment

The two most commonly used treatments for bipolar disorder are with mood stabilizers or psychotherapy. Drugs used to treat bipolar disease have many side effects and it is important for patients to know these. Mood stabilizers can be very damaging to the body if they are not taking at the correct time. These drugs need to be taking religiously, even when the  bipolar  symptoms subside. Things that need to be closely monitored while on drug therapy include: appearance of severe mood episodes, sleeping activity, behavior and changes in appetite. Things such as alcohol, recreational drugs can interact with the bipolar disorder drugs. The overall goal is to reduce the stresses experienced by the patient and to give them control back over their lives to improve both their illness and their quality of life.

2.Lithium. Lithium is generally used to control bipolar manic patients. It is most effective in limiting the reappearance of depressive and manic modes.

3.Anticonvulsants. Valproate with brand name Depakote and carbamazepine coming under the brand name Tegretol. They  are anticonvulsants and mood-stabilizers and are very  good in hard-to-treat bipolar symptoms.

4.The first kind of medicine that should be considered is antipsychotics such as carbamazeprine and valproate. Many patients do not respond to lithium or to anticonvulsant medications, but the antipsychotic drug clozapine is much more effective at preventing bipolar mood swings.

5.Some other prescribed drugs. Olanzapine ” Aproved by the FDA – this drug is capable in the treatment of severe bipolar manic symptoms.

Any nutritional supplements and over-the-counter medications need to be disclosed, so that the doctor can check for the possibility of harmful interactions. Never change your treatment by yourself. Talk to your doctor, who will let you know if any course of treatment needs to be started or stopped on your bipolar symptom medications.

This depressive disorder has been known to be with us since man started recording history. We read in the Old Testament, Job as well as the famous King David, suffered from this terrible illness. Hippocrates the Greek physician called depression, a black bile (melancholia). A clinical depression is a serious medical disorder that is negative in nature which affects how we feel, think and act. It has been written in literature arts for many, many years, but what does it mean when we refer to this mental illness – depressive disorder or a bipolar depression disorder? In the last century, depression was portrayed as a weakness of temperament which was inherited. Only in the beginning of the 20th century did Freud link the progress of depression to guilt with conflict.

The Two Divisions of Depression

Depression was divided into two in the olden days:

• Endogenous: linked to a genetic origin, this depression is coming from within the body and probably is caused by the body itself but nobody knows the source. Bipolar depression happens to fall under this category.

•Neurotic or reactive: depression is caused from outside, like the death of a loved one, losing somebody special and the loss of the only source of income. In 70s and the 80s, the focus changed from “the cause”, to the “effects” of depression on victims.

Nobody  knows what causes depression or bipolar depression, but all would agree that:

• It is a syndrome that reflects severe sad, irritable mood which can be classed as abnormal sadness or grief. These feelings of sadness of depression  are both intense and takes a long time when compared to the normal ups and downs.

•The  characteristics include eating, weight  and sleeping problems and the presence of negative thoughts, moods, and behaviors. The  physical symptoms are, crying spells, aches in the body, very low energy in both work and sex.

• The risks for coronary artery disease, HIV, asthma, and some other medical diseases increases also with mortality rate.

• The human costs of depression in the United States alone are huge which includes – treatment and other indirect costs, like absenteeism of workers and lost in productivity.

Bipolar Depression Symptoms

The unique trait of this illness is, it’s not the outside that is causing the depression, but the brain producing its lows with the feelings of worry, sad, angry, guilt, isolation and hopelessness. This disorder is caused by the brain’s neurotransmitters which can cause sleeping and eating problems and a shift in moods.

Problems with Not Treating

Family members of those with peopleof bipolar depression, can drain out the energy of family members. Like any serious diseases, depression  in bipolar can create a lot of problems with those living together, the family, friends, and even your boss at work.

Bipolar Treatment Depression

Bipolar depression can be inherited within families and if you find that a member of your family or a friend are showing symptoms of bipolar depression like sleeping too much, sad, feelings of helpless, worthless, hopeless with decreased energy and concentration, please seek medical advice near you so they can be given bipolar treatment early.
