The symptoms of bipolar are divided into two groups; they are manic and depressive. People with bipolar disorder are going to suffer both groups of symptoms.

Mania

Mania is the high point of bipolar symptoms . With mania the person is feeling high. They are happy and feeling like they are on top of the world.

The major point of mania, though, is that the person is not simply happy, but happy to the extreme. In fact, every symptom a person has in a manic episode is taken to the extreme which is why it is considered mania and not simply just being happy.

Another problem with a manic episode is that due to the extreme high the person is on they may have a tendency to act impulsively without any control over their behavior. Many people during a manic episode feel like they are invincible.

Other things that can happen during a manic episode may not seem like happy behavior. A person may become very aggressive and confrontational. They may seem very mouthy or irritated.

Symptoms of bipolar (manic episode) include:

• Very confident
• Irritable
• High energy
• No need for sleep
• Unrealistic thoughts
• High self esteem
• Fast speech
• Extremely active
• Unable to concentrate
• Restlessness
• Reckless behavior

Depression

Another kind of episode suffered by a person suffering from bipolar disorder is depressive episode. Totally the opposite of mania, depression brings about someone to feel extremely weak. The person may feel very sad and low.

They will begin to feel like their life is useless. The depressive episode may cause thoughts and actions to suicide.

A depressive episode is often times more harmful to a person than a manic episode. Depressive episodes are almost always treated with medication because of this fact.

However, regular medications used to treat depression do not often work for bipolar depression and can actually make it worse. A person is a bipolar depressive episode will often move slowly and start to act very different than someone who simply is suffering from depression.

Depression bipolar symptoms:

• Feeling blameworthy
• Very sorrow
• Moving and talking slowly
• Always sleeping
• Great changes in habits of eating
• Feeling of emptiness
• Apathy

It is important not to ignore the signs of bipolar disorder. Bipolar symptoms are the first sign that something is wrong and the first chance for a person to seek help and get treatment.

The role of medication is important for those suffering from symptoms of manic depression or bipolar 1 disorder / depression. In many cases, medication is the primary thing that is helping to keep them going. But medications are not perfect and for some they can cause adverse side effects. And the same is true for basically any medicine used to fight a disease. However, one way to at least mitigate the chances of medicine having harmful effects is to subject it to stringent testing.

Prior to any medicine being promoted as being effective for a certain illness, that medicine must be approved by the FDA. All the same, just because a medication does not have FDA approval doesn’t necessarily indicate that it is not effective. It could simply be in trials or it could be that money is not available to do long term clinical trials. The best thing is to find a doctor or health provider that you trust and follow their recommendations.

For a large segment of the population, therapy has a negative connotation. And it’s mostly undeserved. People believe that they will be stigmatized or viewed as unbalanced if they seek psychiatric help. But, for millions of people it can literally turn their lives around.

You have a couple of options when it comes to manic depression therapy treatment. You can partake in private therapy or you can choose to enroll in  group therapy sessions. Therapy can be very helpful in helping people understand themselves, understand their emotional swings, and understand that they have some control over this illness. Therapy can help them realize that they do not have to be an innocent bystander in their own life.

People who suffer from this terrible disorder can still manage to live an almost normal and productive life with the right treatment and medications. The more difficult cases may require hospital stays of various lengths to treat the problem.

Manic depression is an illness that affects millions of people. The best way to help those suffering from it is to bring it out of the closet and help them get the treatment that they need.

Manic depressive disorder is more a category of mental disorders rather than a single illness. It’s also known as manic depression, bipolar disorder or bipolar affective disorder, and it’s often characterized by excessive mood swings, ranging between a highly elevated mood, referred to as mania, and a severely depressed mood. Finding the best treatment options can often be very challenging, since variations of the disorder can manifest in different ways (rapid cycling between moods, for example, versus a longer, slower cycle), and will respond to different things. If a person can find a therapist who is especially knowledgeable about the illness, then this is the first step toward getting a handle on it. Treating the disorder is frequently a matter of teamwork.

Often people who live with manic depressive disorder function well in the periods between manic and depressive episodes. This means they can take an active role, along with their doctors, in devising and monitoring their own recovery depression treatments. They particularly need to guard against the temptation to go off their medications, thinking they no longer need them, if the symptoms seem to disappear. So their therapy will often not be restricted just to the drugs, but may include psychotherapy to help them recognize any of their own behaviors that might contribute to the worsening of their illness.

When it comes to the medications prescribed for manic depressives, there are a great many currently available. However, lithium has been used for many years in various forms, and seems to have the best track record for stabilizing the mood swings and even for reducing instances of suicide. One difficulty with this drug, however, is the side effects of high blood pressure, water retention and constipation. So, new treatments are often sought to see if other drugs might work as well, with fewer repercussions. Interestingly, it’s a breast cancer medicine called tamoxifen that has shown one of the best and quickest responses to a manic phase. Other mood stabilizers and antipsychotic drugs are also among the current treatments.

New drugs are being developed all the time, of course. And the constellation of manic depressive disorder illnesses is constantly being studied, and knowledge about them is always being refined. People who experience one of the manifestations of this disorder can help in their own treatment by reading up on whatever bipolar information they can find, working with a therapist, and being as attentive as possible to their own behavior and warning signs. Treating and controlling this illness is really a joint venture.
